I'm only finished with the first chapter --and with going through all of the supplementary material for chapter one that's hyperlinked in the instructor guide, which I think should be mandatory rather than supplementary-- but I'm already convinced that this class (and its supplementary materials) should be a requirement for CS majors at least, if not for engineers and "STEM"-type majors in general.

The Stochastic Parrots paper, in particular, is excellent. Two of that paper's listed authors (Emily Bender @emilymbender, Angelina McMillan-Major) hail from the University of Washington. Not surprising then, I suppose, that the folks behind this class/course/curriculum/website also hail from there: Carl Bergstrom (@ct_bergstrom) and Jevin West (@jevinwest@x.com). Those two are also members of a broader effort from that same university called the Center for an Informed Public (@uwcip).

"A new report by the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se) revealed that #Azerbaijan has made significant strides in its school #curriculum, becoming the first #Muslim-majority country to incorporate a definition of #antisemitism into #textbooks.

The report, published on Thursday, is part of a three-part series on Central #Asian #curricula produced in collaboration with the Ruderman Family Foundation, also examining #Uzbekistan and #Kazakhstan."

Since I mentioned the subject yesterday and always say that education has declined in Europe and the United States (probably in Canada, too), , I really ought to explain myself. To my mind, this represents the perfect education. This is meant as a guide from elementary (primary) through high (secondary) school, so some courses will depend on the age of the students. M means mandatory while o means optional. As for university, my belief is that, unlike a vocational school, it should be primarily a place of learning, not merely of obtaining employment. Therefore, the continuation of some of these courses should be encouraged. Also, I believe in proper dress, addressing teachers respectfully, etc.

The Biden admin encouraged schools in the opposite direction, promoting #diversity & #equity initiatives & directing schools to #respect #transgender students’ rights, but it NEVER tried to CONDITION federal FUNDING on what was taught in #classrooms. The #Education Dept during #Trump’s first term also did not try to #dictate #curriculum, w/then-Secretary Betsy DeVos arguing that the curriculum should be decided at the local level.

The red flags and signs of oppression and indoctrination are appearing already. I’d wager on civil war in Syria within a year.
People never learn, and some things will never change.

www.bbc.comSyria: New government's school curriculum changes spark concernThe curriculum will take on a more Islamic slant, with evolution and Big Bang theory dropped from science.

If #Trump is allowed back in the #WhiteHouse, the #intellectual divide between red and blue states will drastically expand as #GOP-controlled states Institute an educational #curriculum more suited to the 19th century than the modern world. The #dumb are going to get dumber, and #students from these states are going to find #employment outside of #church organizations or family #farms very difficult to obtain and thrive in.
