Since I just upgraded from balcony to allotment, here is a question: if you are #gardening in the soil (not containers) what do you wish you knew when you started out?

Edit: south Germany, (-5° to 40°) sandy soil

Well, I just learned that my husband and canine (two separate entities) met a mantis earlier today, hanging out somewhere in the now mostly fallen fennel stalks! Just spent time looking, but didn’t see any mantises about. So much stuff quietly going on in a garden, so many little systems operating, ants farming whitefly larvae on leaves, creatures nomming fruit at night, mantids finding comfort in cool debris… #insectodon #bugs #mantis #gardenLife #outdoors #creatures #quietThings

#gardening -ers, there's a really cool tool for getting deep roots like brambles out, it's got a long handle, a J shape about the size of a half basketball with a blade on the inside and a kind of tiny spade on the end of the hook. You could stab into the ground behind the root then rotate to get the hook under the root then pull and the roots came up lovely.
What's it called?
Can you help? Also boost please. Much obliged!
