A railroad to the stars! The Milky Way glows over a BNSF spur in northwestern Nevada, with a red signal light casting an eerie glow. The camera captures what the human eye can’t—light painting and stacking bring the night to life.

Burlington Northern Sante Fe railroad spur and the Milky Way galactic core at Flannigan in northwestern Nevada, USA, on a somewhat hazy late spring evening.

This image is a blend of several sky exposures "stacked" to reduce digital "noise" and several more longer exposures for the foreground where I "light painted" the tracks while walking around with a handheld flashlight. On this particular evening, the haze in the air made it more reflective of the light to the point where the red signal light on the spur actually reflected off the atmosphere, adding an extra red (and somewhat eerie to me) glow. The golden glow to the clouds on the right of the frame is reflected light from nearby Reno, Nevada. I never cease being fascinated by how much more the camera "sees" at night compared to the human eye.

Lightshow yesterday evening. Celestial fireworks are the best. Took more complex panorama shots at different locations, editing will take a lot more time with those.

Parish house of my former home town. A big half-timbered house surrounded by trees. Every window is decorated with lights, also the large fir in front of it.

Closer view shot from a little artificial fountain in front of it. A big wreath is put on it during Advent with four big electrical candles half buried under the snow illuminating the foreground.

Sometimes darkness is self-defense, sometimes it is ignorance, sometimes it is simply something we don't have a frame of reference to understand.

Good things happen at night too.

I have always loved nightscapes. I remember being on the plaza in Santa Fe when I was around 10. We would wander from gallery to gallery. I was always mesmerized by the nightscapes. The vibe, the feeling, and the shadows captivated me. There is a sublime beauty in the night and twilight.
