Ben Meiselas reports on an interview he did with Elizabeth Warren about Trump's economic "policy" and insider trading with the tariff chaos. He notes:

"What we’re witnessing isn’t leadership. It’s a billionaire boys club strip-mining the country while they cackle over champagne and pink slips."

Good old-fashioned reporting, Facts, views, traced to names and sources, The Guardian is still doing it, occasionally.

The impact of trump tariffs on businesses, told by example. A good piece of proper journalism by Joanna Partridge. She's on my (short) list of "should read this author, if there is time" now.

The Guardian · Terrible timing and huge uncertainty: how ports and shipping are handling tariff turmoilBy Joanna Partridge

"Serious though the tariff war is, there is a danger it may distract attention from the wider crisis, namely that Trump and his sidekicks are presiding over a quasi-fascist state, with huge damage to the rule of law, democratic values and the lives and living standards of countless poorer nations being cut off from US overseas aid."

China is well positioned to weather Trump’s trade war

> (Trump's) team is scrambling to rationalise the chaos as a master plan to build a coalition to defeat Chinese mercantilism. But any such plan is doomed to fail

> To understand why, we first need to get at what Trump really wants from tariffs. The usual claims — that he wants to crack down on unfair trade practices, eliminate trade deficits, reindustrialise America, confront #China — do not hold up.

The official crackdown is part of #China’s retaliation for #Trump’s sharp increase in #tariffs that started on April 2.

On April 4, the Chinese government ordered restrictions on the export of 6 heavy rare earth metals, which are refined entirely in China, as well as rare earth magnets, 90% of which are produced in China. The metals, & special magnets made with them, can now be shipped out of China only with special export licenses.

Shipments of the magnets, essential for assembling everything from cars & drones to robots & missiles, have been halted at many Chinese ports while the Chinese govt drafts a new regulatory system. Once in place, the new system could permanently prevent supplies from reaching certain companies, including American military contractors.

#China Halts Critical Exports as #TradeWar Intensifies

China has suspended exports of a wide range of critical minerals & magnets, threatening to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies & military contractors around the world.

WASHINGTON — Investor who predicted the 2008 financial crisis says he's 'worried about something worse than a recession' - Ray Dalio, the founder of the hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, said he is "worried about something worse than a recession" if President Donald Trump does not properly handle tariffs and other economic policies.
"I think that right now we are at a decision-making point and very close to a recession," Dalio said on NBC News' "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "And I'm worried about something worse than a recession, if this isn't handled well." - #economy #economics #finance #recession #TrumpTariffs #Tariffs #TradeWar #Inflation #Stagflation nbcnews.com/politics/politics-

U.S. President #DonaldTrump's administration has been predicting its barrage of tariffs targeting #China will push #Apple into manufacturing the #iPhone in the United States for the first time.

> But that's an unlikely scenario even with #US #tariffs now standing at 145 percent on products made in China – the country where Apple has manufactured most of its iPhones since the first model hit the market 18 years ago. news.cgtn.com/news/2025-04-12/

A quick note here: some of the materials I use in my #jewelry work come from overseas. So in addition to the 50% increase in the price of silver over the past two years, I'm also looking at material price hikes due to the Republican administration's #tariffs.

> Trump has finally ended America’s exorbitant privilege.

> The president’s erratic leadership style, which reminds me of the guy who pulls off his steering wheel so that the other driver will be forced to swerve, is now endangering his country’s currency and equity values, as has always been the case in other, non-exceptional political economies with this much turmoil.
