Schengen's fucking brilliant, isn't it? You just fly between two places and you don't piss-arse around with passports and border controls. We shd have worldwide Schengen. Everywhere. Other than the US, of course.

After three hours of #AzadiRail with 30 - 40 kph on a grass track, we arrived in 
#Golenti , the last stop before the New European Bridge to 
#Видин #Vidin.
Here, the scenery changes : we leave behind the crappy old infrastructure and the sight on the ruial Walachia region. After an illegal #Schengen passport check (weren't they supposed to end last year ?), we now continue on the brand new, modern and electrified infrastructure bringing us onto the bridge.
The electrified tracks here are a joke : the complete line up to #Craiova is unelectrified and barely capable of holding a train. This station with three tracks, catenary - all in the middle of nowhere. EU funding without any progress towards the existing line into Romania. That's sad to see.

Today will be my first time to cross the border of Romania after their full merger into #Schengen space. Finally no more border checks in the middle of the night. Defend Schengen. Now and forever !

Heute beim Netzwerktreffen der Europäischen Bewegung #Saarland habe ich zur Bedeutung offener Grenzen gesprochen. Schengen ist für unsere #Großregion Alltag und Identität. Danke für den inspirierenden #Austausch – lasst uns Europa weiter im Alltag leben und die Schengen-Idee verteidigen! 
Wir leben in Zeiten, in denen Medien klare Warheiten oft nicht mehr aussprechen. Deshalb unterstütze ich den Hinweis in diesem Tagesschau-Artikel, dass die derzeitigen Grenzkontrollen von Deutschland illegal sind:
"Ausnahmen von dem Verbot lässt der Schengener Grenzkodex nur zu, wenn die Kontrollen in besonderen Gefahrensituationen zwingend erforderlich sind. Und auch dann nur für begrenzte Zeiträume. Dem widersprechen schon die jetzigen Grenzkontrollen."

The VisaGuide Passport Index however puts different weights on visa-free (1), passport-free (1.01), eTA (1) and visa on arrival (0.8). This gives all the passport-free #Schengen countries a slight advantage, bumping Finland to # 1 and Singapore to # 2. Japan drops to 13th having more VOA destinations, and S.Korea in 29th place with 9 entry-ban destinations. More nuanced (and maybe more accurate) score?

WIE gut die Entscheidung für offene Grenzen war kann man u.a. daran sehen, wer alles was dagegen hat… von rot-rechts bis ganz rechts.
Heute vor 30 Jahren trat das #Schengen-Abkommen in Kraft. Ein Meilenstein für grenzenloses Reisen und europäische Einheit.
Hab ich euch schon gesagt, dass ich dieses Abkommen für das Beste halte, was Europa je getan hat?

The German half year border controls with other Schengen countries started on September 16 2024. They were planned to stop at March 16 2025. But no, they are prolonged until September 16 2025.
Dutch border controls started on December 9 2024, and should stop on June 8th..
