So, my 15 year old kindle is getting increasingly glitchy the longer I refuse to connect it to the Internet, and I'm looking for a new ebook reader before it dies completely. Recommendations requested!

Needs:
- epaper with backlight for night reading (this is the only way I can read with a headache)
- load on epub files via usb
- can handle ao3 fanfics (the images in these are part of what's glitching out my old kindle)
- preferably fits in my skirt pocket (so, 7inch or so)
- does not *require* internet connection ever. Not even to set the clock. (Again, kindle glitch has made it so I can't tell what books are newly added because the time is glitchy and apparently the Internet is the only known fix.)
- works with Calibre for transferring books
- it would be nice if it worked with Libby for my library too, but I kind of expect libby to enshittify so I'm not going to worry too much about it.

I suspect the logical replacement is a kobo, but I'm worried corporate enshittification will leave me in the same state I'm in now. I'd definitely prefer a free software option so I won't have to worry as much about some corporate changes making my books annoying, but I'm not a purist so this is more about having a device that works before this one dies on me.

Anyone have trouble with #Calibre 8 hanging on the first startup on Windows 11? If I click it so windows realizes it's hung, cancel it, and start again, it reliably starts on the second try. I can repro it reliably, but can't seem to find via a fix with my search fu.

Anyone who seriously tells me the fix is to use Linux instead is getting insta-blocked. 😝

@dennyhenke
I think you have to look more specifically for the task or interest. Search #linux with said interest.

A lot of apps have been around forever so maybe don't get talked about much.
Like #calibre or lilypond, kicad, open scad.

I tend to just use #emacs for everything because I don't like lots of buttons and icons everywhere.
I don't use a mouse
That limits the things that solve my niches.

I use Mpd for my music player, it has so many front ends, including emacs. I even use emacs for my browser, or #nyxtbrowser or qute browser.
So I'm off in the woods with my outlier self and nobody wants to hear about that.

Calibre Ebook Manager Improves Support for Kobo E-Readers

A new version of Calibre, the Swiss-army knife for e-book management is out, and it brings some notable new features for e-bookworms to dig into. Calibre 8.0.1 boasts improved support for Kobo e-readers, with Calibre now equipped to natively edit, view and convert Kobo’s proprietary KEPUB file format to regular EPUB files for reading on non-Kobo devices and apps (like Calibre itself). Additionally, users of Kobo devices can now use Calibre to convert EPUB to KEPUB automatically when sending books across, saving time and hassle of first converting and then sending. I’ll admit, I hadn’t heard of KEPUB before writing :sys_more_orange:
